This protein is essential for the folding and assembly of newly imported proteins in the mitochondria. This gene is adjacent to a related FAmily member and the region between the 2 genes functions as a bidirectional promoter. Several pseudogenes have been associated with this gene. The p50 (NFKB1)/p65 (RELA) heterodimer is the most abundant form of NFKB. The NFKB complex is inhibited by I-kappa-B proteins (NFKBIA, MIM 164008 or NFKBIB, MIM 604495), which inactivate NFKB by trapping it in the cytoplasm.
